Best known to the general public as the former developer of the BlackBerry brand of smartphones, and tablets, it transitioned to an enterprise software and services company under CEO John S. Chen.

Its products are used worldwide by various businesses, car makers, and government agencies, and include the AtHoc crisis communications platform, the QNX real-time operating system, and BlackBerry UEM, an endpoint management platform.

Specializing in secure communications and mobile productivity, BlackBerry was once well known for the keyboards on most of its devices and software services that ran through its own servers.

The original BlackBerry device had a monochrome display while newer models installed color displays. All newer models have been optimized for “thumbing”, the use of only the thumbs to type on a keyboard. The Storm 1 and Storm 2 include a SureType keypad for typing.
